Lake observatories

The Lake Observatories portal brings together long-term monitoring data, scientific research, and tools from across our lake sites into a single, accessible resource. Drawing on decades of sustained observation, the portal allows you to explore the history and changing condition of individual lakes, understand the processes that shape them, and access datasets that support both research and wider public use.

Through the UK Lakes Portal and individual lake observatory pages, you can discover data from a wide range of sites, from well-studied systems such as Loch Leven and the Cumbrian lakes to a growing network of monitored waters across the UK. These data help track environmental change over time, including water quality, ecology, and the impacts of climate and human activity.

Alongside the data, the portal provides access to the latest news, events, and project updates, helping to connect ongoing science with real-world impacts and communities. Educational materials and supporting resources are also available, making it easier for students, teachers, and anyone with an interest in freshwater environments to explore and understand lake science.

The Lake Observatories portal continues to develop, with new lakes, datasets, and supporting information being added over time — building a richer, more connected picture of the UK's lakes and how they are changing.
